Elements in a thesis must appear in the following order: Appendices must be limited to supporting material genuinely subsidiary to the main argument of the work. Unless the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies has given consent in advance, theses that do not comply with these specifications will not be approved. If you know which members of the committee will be on the Examining Committee you can include them there; otherwise, they can go under Additional Supervisory Committee Members. Certain additional elements may also be required, as specified below.

If the anticipated submission date changes, please let the Doctoral Exams team know as soon as possible so this can be communicated to the External Examiner as appropriate. Candidates are required to maintain active registration until Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies has confirmed acceptance of the final dissertation and associated forms and approvals post-Oral Defence. The Candidate and members of the Supervisory Committee are responsible for ensuring that the dissertation is well-presented and contains all the required elements outlined on our website under Formatting Requirements. It is your responsibility to submit a thesis in the correct format and allow time for revisions to be complete in order to meet deadlines. Supplementary materials must be relevant to the thesis work and consist of electronic material or multimedia that cannot easily be included in the PDF of your thesis. If you would like to delay publication of your thesisyou must obtain approval from the Faculty of Graduate Studies before submitting your thesis. We highly recommend you ensure that you have permission to include names of individuals in the Acknowledgements. Grad Studies will check the formatting but does not proofread.

The title page and committee page do not appear in the table of contents.

Dissertation & Thesis Preparation

Students should rely on their research supervisors and committee members for guidance. Any shipping costs incurred are the responsibility of the Graduate Program or Research Fgs. If you are preparing for final submission, your thesis will be reviewed more quickly if you submit directly to cIRcle rather than emailing it for review.

It’s a good idea to get a pre-review when your thesis is nearly ready for examination, so that you have time to make any formatting changes in advance of corrections required by your committee or examiners. You cannot make changes to your thesis after it has been accepted into cIRcle, so you will not be able to correct any errors after your final submission. We are not able to do pre-reviews at this time due to the number of theses being submitted for the April 18th deadline.
